  The lynx is a short-tailed wild cat with long legs, large paws padded for walking on snow,

  a big tuft of hair on its ears and long whiskers on the face. the colour of the body varies

  from light brown to grey and is occasionally marked with dark brown spots, particularly on

  the flanks and limbs. the lynx is a large, powerful cat inhabiting the forest areas at high

  altitudes where there is a dense cover of shrubs, reeds and grass. the animal climbs trees

  and swims well, but does its hunting on the ground. it feeds on birds and mammals and often

  on sheep and goats. it is an animal beloning to the northen hemisphere and is found in large

  parts of north america, canada and europe. in india the lynx is confined primarily to the

  jammu &kashimer region.


         Lynxes are usually solitary, but several of the animals are sometimesseen travelling

  or hunting together. mating takes place in the late winter. the lynx makes its lair in a

  hollow log, or in the shelter of a fallen tree or under an overhanging ledge. here two to four

  kittens are brown to the female.


        As it is hunted for its beautiful fur, lynx has become extremely rare in india.
